Femi Azeez: It was special to get my first Millwall goal at The Den
Femi Azeez was delighted to open his Millwall account at The Den.
Azeez netted his first goal for the club in the 93rd minute to earn the Lions a 1-1 draw against Sunderland and extend their unbeaten run to eight Championship games.
The South Londoners piled on the pressure in the second half, searching for an equaliser that finally came, much to the delight of the home fans.
“In the second half, we just piled on the intensity,” Azeez told Millwall TV. “We thought let’s just go for the attack and eventually it worked for us. We grew into the game and deserved the point but obviously we wanted the three.”
The game was suspended in the first half as there were two separate medical emergencies in the crowd which resulted in the players leaving the pitch.
“First of all, I want to wish a speedy recovery to the two people that were taken ill,” said Azeez. “Hopefully they are doing well. In the dressing room, we just regrouped, really, going over what we could do better and how we can improve it for the second half. It was like a mini half-time break, just regrouping for the final five minutes of the first half and then preparing for the second.”
Millwall head coach Neil Harris has installed a never-say-die attitude in his team and it is now eight matches unbeaten for the Lions.
Azeez said: “We are never going to say we aren’t going to score at The Den. We have belief, we know what to do and how to do it and how to score. It’s more just the resilience to keep going and going and it worked out in the end.”
It was the former Reading player’s first goal for the club since his arrival in August.
He said: “It felt great, my first goal for the club, and special it was here at The Den as well. As soon as Aidomo [Emakhu] made the run, I’ve done a lot of work with the coaches who have told me to get to the back post area. I said: ‘I’m getting in that area today’ and it worked out. It was pleasing.”
