Five London Broncos Ladies players selected by England Community Lions

Five London Broncos Ladies players have been selected to represent England Community Lions when they play England DISE at Pilkington Recs in St Helens next month.

Katie Wallis, Courtney Treco, Sue Nuemann, Kirsty Griffiths and Kate Selby have been named in Peter Grayburn’s 20-player squad ahead of the first meeting of both teams on Saturday, December 10.

The announcement also confirmed an additional six players from the south will play for England Community Lions with Bedford and the British Army also having players named in the team.

Broncos Ladies captain Treco said the inclusion of almost a dozen players based in the south is testament to the hard work by those committed to growing Rugby League locally.

“It’s really exciting for the club and Rugby League in the south as a whole,” said Treco. “Over half of the squad play down here which proves how competitive the game is and how much it’s growing.

“Opportunities for women to play Rugby League were very limited for a long time, but the addition of London Broncos has added some stability.

“The exposure and interest generated by the World Cup is helping too. It’s clear to see the sport has hit a new peak this year and long may that continue.

“We’re hopeful people watching the respective tournaments will catch the bug and help make women’s Rugby League even stronger in 2023.”

The Broncos Ladies quintet will join the England Community Lions squad on November 26 and December 3 for two final training camps before the match.

Treco was particularly pleased for her team-mates Nuemann and Selby, who only started playing Rugby League this year after joining the Broncos.

She added: “I’m really pleased for Sue and Kate. Their progress has been brilliant, and they deserve this opportunity. Katie and Kirsty have been part of the Broncos from our first campaign and I’m pleased their efforts have been recognised too.

“It should be a great match and we look forward to taking to the field after some time away from playing competitively.”
