Former Addicks duo help propel Luton Town to Championship play-off final
Former Charlton Athletic duo Tom Lockyer and Alfie Doughty are heading to Wembley later this month after seeing off Sunderland in their Championship play-off semi-final.
The Hatters won 2-0 at Kenilworth Road last night to prevail 3-2 on aggregate and set up a showdown with either Middlesbrough or Coventry, who play the second leg of their tie this evening.
Lockyer headed home a Doughty cross in the 43rd minute to put Luton two goals ahead and the centre-back also got a vital touch from a corner to allow Gabriel Osho to sweep home from close range.
Charlton signed Lockyer on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2019 but his two-year contract included a release clause if the SE7 club did not retain Championship status.
The Addicks were relegated on the final day of the 2019-20 season and Lockyer activated his option to leave on a free transfer, signing for Luton.
Winger Doughty was sold by Charlton to Stoke City in January 2021.
The youngster had previously attracted strong interest from Celtic and was due to be a free agent that summer.
Then Luton boss Nathan Jones made Doughty his first signing of last summer’s transfer window on a permanent deal.
