Former AFC Wimbledon defender released by Sheffield Wednesday after Championship promotion

Former AFC Wimbledon defender Ben Heneghan has been released by Sheffield Wednesday after they were promoted to the Championship.

The Owls were promoted to the second division after they beat Barnsley 1-0 at Wembley in the League One play-off final.

Ex-Sheffield United centre-back joined Darren Moore’s side in the summer after leaving AFC Wimbledon following their relegation to League Two.

The 29-year-old made 13 appearances at Hillsborough but was ruled out for the rest of the season in October after suffering knee damage that required surgery.

Heneghan joined the Dons in 2020 under Glyn Hodges and made 71 appearances at Plough Lane.

Of his release from Wednesday, Heneghan said on Twitter: “Tough one to take considering the situation, but I’ll be back around the club during preseason until I’m signed off. So it’s not a goodbye just yet. The work continues! Feeling good – thanks for the messages.”
