Former Burnley defender on trial with Charlton Athletic

Former Burnley defender Ali Koiki is on trial at Charlton Athletic.

The 21-year-old left-back has been named on the bench for the Addicks’ friendly against Southend United this afternoon.

The match is taking place at the South London club’s Sparrows Lane training ground.

New signings Alex Gilbey and Conor Washington are both on the bench.

Adam Matthews, who is a free agent after his Charlton deal expired, is also named as a substitute. Charlton want to secure the right-back on a new contract but the EFL have not allowed it to go through due to the terms of the transfer embargo.

There is no Jason Pearce (knee) or Chuks Aneke (ankle).

It was reported in June that Koiki had rejected a contract extension at Burnley as he wanted to secure first-team football.

He was a junior on the books of Crystal Palace but was spotted by the Clarets in 2016 while playing for Croydon.

Koiki played 15 games on loan for Swindon Town in 2019.
