Former Charlton centre-back wants to see Johnnie Jackson land job on full-time basis

Jorge Teixeira reckons Johnnie Jackson has already shown he should be appointed Charlton manager on a permanent basis.

The Portuguese centre-back, now on the books of Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden, played in the same Addicks team as the current caretaker boss during the 2016-2017 season.

Jackson has won three and drawn one of his four matches when he has been in temporary charge – not including the EFL Trophy reverse to Leyton Orient which saw nearly all of his senior players rested.

Teixeira, 35, told the South London Press: “As a player he showed us that he is a warrior. He helped and pushed his team-mates. He’s been doing a good job [as a manager] and I hope the best for him.

“When I arrived at Charlton, he was a player, the captain and a legend of the club. Afterwards he became a coach there. He was already learning the job of a manager. Now he has had a big opportunity and shown that he can do it.”

Charlton have had 18 different managers since Alan Curbishley’s 15-year reign drew to a close in 2006.

Teixeira said: “Charlton are a big club and when the results are not going in the right direction the board wants the best for the club.

“Very often, the board thinks that the best is to sack the coaches. Charlton is a big club, but in renovation. I hope that with Johnnie they can turn the page.”

The Addicks still languish 18th in the table and are 11 points adrift of sixth-placed Oxford United.

“The first target now is to get into a stable place in the table and from there they can think higher,” said Teixeira.
