Former Charlton defender scores first Premier League goal – pleased to silence some of the Luton Town doubters
Former Charlton Athletic defender Tom Lockyer scored his first Premier League goal yesterday – and it also helped Luton Town to their maiden victory since promotion to the top flight.
The Wales international reacted quickly at close range to finish in the 24th minute after a corner was not cleared.
And it was a free-kick by Alfie Doughty, another former Addick, which led to Carlton Morris doubling their advantage with an excellent first-time strike. Luton won 2-1 at Everton to climb out of the bottom three.
Lockyer, 28, joined Charlton in the summer of 2019 on a two-year contract but crucially had a relegation release clause which he activated once the SE7 club failed to stay in the Championship.
He signed for Luton on a free transfer in September 2020.
“There have been a lot of people saying a lot of things – so it is nice to try and silence them a little bit by getting the first win on the board,” Hatters skipper Lockyer told BBC’s Match Of The Day. “It feels really good.
“We need to try and back that up. A first win is a first win – we want to try and push on now.”
