Former Charlton keeper earns praise as Posh boss delighted in how they beat Charlton pressing game
Darren Ferguson felt his Peterborough side produced their best display of the season in their 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic yesterday.
The Addicks’ six-match undefeated run was ended at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Former Charlton youngster Abraham Odoh was on target for the Posh but Ferguson also had praise for another of their ex-players – goalkeeper Jed Steer.
“The second goal comes from Jed,” he said. “He was absolutely magnificent today. The amount of counter-attacks he started and they are so dangerous from set-pieces – the amount he caught and released us, set us off.
“It is a great finish from Ibby (Odoh), he makes it look easy.
“In the second-half we missed four unbelievable chances. There is one with Ibby where the keeper is on the floor. I thought: ‘This could be costly’. If they score the fans will be up and they will be throwing it in the box. So it was a relief when Malik (Mothersille) scored.
“It was a fantastic result for us and, at times, a very good performance – a clean sheet against a team that makes you defend. They throw the ball in the box but we dealt with it ever so well.
“I felt the performance today was coming, in terms of what we worked on all week – mainly in possession and how we had to beat the press. When we did we caused them all sorts of problems. The first goal was always going to be important because you saw what happened when we went ahead – in transition.
“It is a great goal. A real bit of quality from Kwame (Poku) and a great header from Sam (Hughes).
“It’s our best performance of the season – given the opposition, and where they are. That’s eight unbeaten now and we are getting clean sheets and doing stuff we should have been doing all season. Once we got past their press we were in so many times.
“That was the best performance by Ricky (Ricky-Jade Jones) this season. He ran and didn’t complicate his game. If he plays like that and doesn’t overthink what he is doing that is the Ricky that people have looked at and have been interested in.”
