Former Charlton, Millwall and AFC Wimbledon youngsters called up to England U20 World Cup squad

James Beadle, Darko Gyabi, Samuel Edozie and Matthew Cox have all been called up to the England squad for this summer’s Under-20 World Cup in Argentina.

Goalkeeper Beadle left Charlton in January 2022 after turning down a professional contract with the Addicks to join Brighton & Hove Albion.

Beadle, 18, who has been on loan with League Two side Crewe Alexandra during the second half of the season, spent nine years at The Valley.

Cox, also a goalkeeper, left Wimbledon in July 2021 to sign for Brentford. He spent four years at Plough Lane, joining at the age of 14.

The 20-year-old has spent the majority of the season acting as back-up to David Raya in Brentford’s first team.

Now Southampton winger Edozie, 20, left Millwall in 2019 to join Manchester City.

The Lions saw Edozie leave as a 16-year-old, with City paying a high six-figure sum to secure his services as a scholar.

Catford-born midfielder Gyabi – now at Leeds United – left Millwall’s academy in 2018 to join Manchester City.

Head coach Ian Forster has also called up Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

England will play Tunisia, Uruguay and Iraq, with the competition starting on May 22.

The tournament had been awarded to Indonesia, but FIFA moved it to Argentina after protests over the participation of Israel in the tournament.
