Former Crystal Palace and Charlton midfielder makes late League Two transfer U-turn

Former Crystal Palace and Charlton midfielder Jonny Williams has snubbed Bradford to join League Two rivals Gillingham on a free transfer.

The Telegraph and Argus are reporting that Williams pulled the plug on a move to Valley Parade to join Mark Hughes’ Bradford.

Williams looked set to join the Bantams, apparently staying at a hotel in Leeds and being prepared to be unveiled as a Bradford player.

But Gillingham came calling before the deal had been all agreed and the 29-year-old has joined Neil Harris’ side.

Palace academy graduate Williams, who featured 66 times for Charlton, was a free agent after leaving Swindon at the end of the season.

Retired Wales international Williams has also had stints at Sunderland and Cardiff during his career.

“I feel like I am coming back home,” said Williams of his move to Prestfield.

“I am from Kent and this is the only Kent team in the Football League.

“I have always wanted to play for Gillingham one day and today is the day it feels right. To be close to family and friends, but also to be part of this project.”
