Former Dons loanee Dobson: ‘I made the right decision to sign for Charlton’

George Dobson has admitted he came close to signing permanently for AFC Wimbledon – but says he made the “right decision” to join Charlton Athletic in the summer 2021 transfer window.

The 25-year-old midfielder will captain Charlton tonight at Old Trafford as they look to knock out Manchester United and secure a place in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.

Dobson spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan at Plough Lane under Mark Robinson, making 24 appearances as the Dons secured League One survival before the end of the campaign.

Former Sunderland man Dobson joined the Addicks under Nigel Adkins and has made 75 appearances in all competitions for the club, winning the Player of the Year at the end of last season.

New Charlton boss Dean Holden recently made Dobson club captain after he replaced Ben Garner.

“I was actually really close to signing for Wimbledon,” admitted Dobson ahead of today’s trip to the 13-time Premier League winners.

“I had a really enjoyable loan spell there. It was only until Charlton came in, and with the draw of such a big club, the fan base and the facilities, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“For me personally, it’s been a brilliant 18 months – the best 18 months of my career so far.

“I’m just thankful I made the right decision.”
