Former Fulham and Chelsea defender signs contract extension at Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic defender Michael Hector has extended his contract until the summer of 2024.

The former Fulham, Chelsea and Sheffield Wednesday centre-back was due to be out of contract on July 1.

We reported recently that the Addicks were still in negotiations with Hector, who signed for the South Londoners in the January transfer window.

He was a first-choice pick under boss Dean Holden and made 17 appearances.

“I enjoyed my time here last season working with the manager and the staff,” Hector told the club’s website. “It’s a family club and getting another chance to play here was an easy decision to make.”

Holden added: “Re-signing Michael was an important priority for us this summer. Everyone saw the impact he had on the pitch after he arrived at the club. He also showed real leadership, supporting the development of our talented young defenders.

“He’s a classy defender and a great character to have around, so I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

Chief executive Peter Storrie said: “Dean has been clear from a very early stage that we should do what we can to re-sign Michael. He was vital for us last season and became popular with the club’s supporters, so we’re really pleased he has signed a new contract with the club.”
