Former Lynn head coach opens new boxing gym in Lambeth
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Former Lynn head coach Samm Mullins has opened his own gym in South London.
The Lambeth-based site is for amateur and professional boxers.
Mullins had plenty of success at the Lynn as the Camberwell club produced 15 national champions.
He quit in August 2016 after the club chose not to re-affiliate with England Boxing and hooked up with Nemesis ABC.
“I’ve been going to other gyms but it is too much hard work,” said Mullins.
“Now it is time for me to step up and see if I can do it on my own.
“Having a gym in the heart of South London is the best place for a boxing gym in my eyes.
“I’ve got a lot of pros I’m working with and a handful of amateurs. I am looking for more pros.
“This has been a long time coming – I should have done it years ago.
“Tony Pettitt, who runs Nemesis, is a close friend of mine and said I could work out of his gym. But boxing and friendship is very hard to mix and I had a discussion with Tony before we had a fall-out. I don’t know how he put up with me for so long.
“I had to move on to save our friendship.”
Catford’s Ellie Scotney, who has been trained long term by Mullins and became the Lynn’s first female national champion, will be a Churchill’s fighter.
Mullins’ son Harry is also a highly promising amateur.
Cruiserweight Darren Gibbons moved to 3-0 with a stoppage win over debutant Aaron Green at York Hall, Bethnal Green on June 30.
“I’ve got a squad of about six fighters that are all either number one or top four,” said Mullins senior. “I’ve got a good base already.
“Do I expect the same kind of success I had at the Lynn? Without a doubt – you’ve got to be in it to win it.
“Success attracts success. I want to get the Churchill’s name out there.”
Good luck Sam
