Former Premier League midfielders expected to have ‘big impact’ at AFC Wimbledon

Mark Robinson is expecting young midfielders George Marsh and Luke McCormick to be big players for AFC Wimbledon next season.

The Dons chief is hoping to add three more signings this summer.

Marsh, 22, left Tottenham this summer. He previously spent time on loan with Leyton Orient.

McCormick moved on a year early from Chelsea as he wanted regular first-team football.

Wimbledon head coach Robinson said: “I expect them to have big impacts. I know Luke was involved in a relegation at Bristol Rovers, but if you look at all the stats they show he was one of the most effective players in the league.

“You only have to look at what Bristol Rovers’ fans think of him. He is adored by their fans.

“George has only had one loan. He has got really good quality. He has got all the attributes to have the same impact as George Dobson had, it might take a little bit of time.

“I got contacted by his agent and initially passed it on to my recruitment team to look at. I spoke to four or five people who worked with him and everything came back massively positive. He is someone with huge potential who just needs someone to get him going again and kickstart his career. He was highly though of at Tottenham under [Mauricio] Pocchetino and regularly trained with the first team and travelled [to matches].”

Robinson also opted to bring experienced centre-back Darius Charles, 33, back for a second spell after his departure from Wycombe.

“He is there as cover but is more than capable of playing 30 games if needed,” said Robinson. “We’ll have a young squad and he has had four promotions.

“He is there if needed as a player but it is what he brings to the squad and the environment of where we want to go.”
