Frank Lampard makes Chelsea return admission
Frank Lampard has admitted he thought he would return to Chelsea as manager after being sacked in January 2021.
The 44-year-old was appointed as Chelsea boss for the first time in 2019 after leading Derby County to the Championship play-off final.
He was sacked 18 months into his tenure, despite leading Chelsea to an FA Cup final in his first season in charge and securing qualification for the Champions League.
Thomas Tuchel replaced Lampard, and he was sacked and replaced by Graham Potter.
The ex-Brighton boss was relieved of his duties after their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday, with Bruno Saltor taking charge of the goalless draw with Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Lampard will take charge of his first game this Saturday against Wolves.
“I didn’t think I’d never be in this seat [again],” said Lampard, facing the press after being announced as Chelsea boss until the end of the season.
“I’m a confident guy, and I understand the game.
“My job is to be as good a manager as I can be. It would be useless to think about what might be down the line.
“It wasn’t in the first part of my mind. Unfinished business? I don’t quite see it like that.
“Unfinished business sounds a bit Hollywood. I want to work to help this club as much as I can.
“To come back at a time when the club have asked me to come and take the role is the most important thing.
“Also, with the belief that I can come and help the cause until the end of the season.
“I’m delighted to get the opportunity. I’m thankful for that and to the people who have decided to give me that opportunity.
“I’m confident in myself and have a good understanding of the squad. I have worked with a lot of them before, but I also know the training ground, the stadium and what Chelsea fans want.
“I will do my utmost in this period coming to give them what they want.
“This is my club. I’m proud to manage this club, and I look forward to the opportunity. I’m ready to put my work into this challenge. I have a clear idea of what I want to do in this period.”
