Gareth Ainsworth has declared it will take something “spectacular” to tempt him away from Wycombe Wanderers.

Millwall have shortlisted the Chairboys chief as one of three contenders to succeed Neil Harris, who resigned earlier this month.

The other candidates are Adam Barrett, who has stepped up from first-team coach to take caretaker charge of the Lions, and former Birmingham and Stoke boss Gary Rowett.

Ainsworth had also been linked with Sunderland but they appointed Phil Parkinson today.

Ainsworth told BBB Three Counties Radio: ”I’m flattered and thankful to everyone who’s enabled all this hype to come about.

“The club has been in the media saying they’ve given me permission to speak to people and that’s fantastic.

“I can’t show my gratitude enough for that because then I’ll look at the position and that’s probably to find out if things are spectacular enough to leave Wycombe.

“But there’s a huge amount of factors involved – my family situation, what we’ve built here and the vote [from the supporters’ trust to decide on a takeover approach from American businessman Rob Couhig].

“It will take something special to move me away but I’m also very grateful and proud to be the Wycombe Wanderers manager.”

  • Gareth ainsworth is one of the best young managers in football & will always be linked with bigger clubs. But he is proud & loyal to his current position. To prise him away it will need to be for a club that is not fighting to stay out of a relegation battle. I think if QPR had chased him before appointment of Warburton he would have moved.
