Gary Rowett outlines why Millwall need to believe heading into Championship final day
Millwall head into the final day of the Championship season with a shot at the play-offs – with manager Gary Rowett outlining what they should still believe.
The Lions beat Peterborough 3-0 today.
The South Londoners had to take maximum points after Sheffield United, currently in the final play-off position, won at QPR last night.
The Blades have a superior goal difference – plus-14 compared to plus-nine.
Asked by the South London Press how much he had hoped or expected Millwall to eat into United’s advantage, Rowett replied: “I felt like three or four goals – which then left it with a four-goal swing. You look at it and think if Bournemouth can beat Forest on Tuesday night and get promoted then maybe their mindset is a little bit different in the final game.
“And Fulham are playing Sheffield United. There’s always the chance that Fulham can score more than one or two goals.
“You basically need to win the game and hope there’s a bit of a swing. At this stage we can’t control that but we can know that anything can happen. You saw it a couple of years ago, Swansea were something like seven goals behind Forest and I think Forest got beaten heavily on the final day of the season. You just don’t know, someone can get sent off.
“It’s not up to us to work that out. It was about us taking care of business. We’ve won three and drawn two of the last five games. Our home form has been brilliant all season. We’re starting to score more goals at the end of the season, which you can argue is a little bit frustrating. We’ve taken it into the last game and given ourselves a bit of a chance.
“We know it’s out of our hands – we’re not stupid. The players, maybe first half, there was a little bit of disappointment seeing the result last night [Sheffield United winning at QPR]. It would’ve been nice to see it go our way and have a little bit more on today’s game.
“But if Sheffield United win their games, good luck to them, because they have done what they need to do to potentially get into the top six. There’s still people fighting to get in there, us and Middlesbrough.”
