Gary Rowett set to make more changes for Millwall’s EFL Cup tie against Cambridge
Millwall manager Gary Rowett is set to make changes for Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie against Cambridge United – and admits that is likely to be more than in the previous round’s victory over Portsmouth.
The Lions have picked up a number of injuries since the season started and were without Danny McNamara, Ryan Leonard, Shaun Hutchinson and Mason Bennett for Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Cardiff City.
“There are probably three or four players with issues that we can’t afford to be injured, when you look at it in the cold light of day,” said Rowett. “It is a difficult one, because in every game you want to try and create that winning mentality and winning culture – that’s the aim.
“We’ve got players that have been waiting for an opportunity. The team have lost the last two games, albeit in different circumstances. I still look at the Cardiff game and think there’s a result to be had there, we just let the game slip away in two or three moments of poor concentration or defending.
“If you’re a player on the sidelines your thinking ‘when do I get my opportunity to show I can get in this team?’ It gives players a chance to stake their claim. Of course it will be a blend, but there might be slightly more changes for this game than we did for the Portsmouth game.”
