George Lapslie signs new Charlton Athletic deal – and Joe Aribo is an urgent priority to secure on fresh terms too

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

George Lapslie has signed a new contract with Charlton Athletic – with boss Lee Bowyer hoping Joe Aribo will be next.

Lapslie, 21, had been due to be out of contract in June. But his fresh terms run until at least 2021.

He told the club’s website: “I’m ecstatic, really. It makes me very proud of myself and what I’ve done.

“I’m sure my family are very proud. I’m going to try and kick on now and really establish myself in the team.”

Bowyer added: “I’m delighted, he deserves it. He’s been working hard and improved a lot this season. I’m pleased for George. Hopefully he can carry on improving.

“He’s always been a lad that leaves everything out there – I don’t think anyone can deny that – but it’s the in-possession stuff he’s improved on a lot and he’s maturing and, obviously, learning. He’s got a good future in front of him.”

Aribo is another Addicks player due to be a free agent in the summer, although the League One side would still be due compensation.

Bowyer told the South London Press: “With Joe, we are still trying to progress that.

“He was outstanding at the weekend – it was like he hadn’t been away [due to injury].

“That’s one we’re desperately trying hard to all sort out.”
