‘Good karma’ – Charlton striker Alfie May on allowing Chuks Aneke to take penalty

Alfie May described his first goal in Charlton’s 4-1 win over Exeter City as “good karma” – even if he needed quick reactions to keep him out of Michael Appleton’s bad books.

The Addicks number nine should have been on penalty-taking duties but handed the ball to Chuks Aneke in Tuesday’s game.

Although Aneke’s spot-kick was saved by Viljami Sinisalo, May had followed the strike in and tucked the loose ball away.

“I take full responsibility,” said the former Cheltenham Town forward. “A few of the lads and staff are probably a little bit angry that I didn’t take it – because I am the penalty taker.

“Chuks has worked hard to get back from injury and then he’s had a setback in pre-season. He just wanted that goal.

“I said yeah because I wanted him to have it and get that goal, kickstart his season. Good karma, eh? It came back to me and I scored.”

May added a second to take his season’s tally to six.

“That’s why I got brought into this club,” he said. “I like to score goals. I work hard and goals pay you back.

“If you look back at my two years that I scored goals at Cheltenham, I go on runs and then I go quiet for three or four games.

“I still work hard for the team and try my best every time I put on the shirt – that is what saves myself if I’m not getting the goals.

“We were very good. We showed good mentality and courage. We conceded a goal and to get back in it, before half-time, was a great time to score.

“The big thing was three points and keeping this run up. That’s three wins on the bounce at home – we want to make this place rocking every time we play and at the minute it seems like that.
