Grant Basey still a Charlton Athletic youth coach despite taking on Cray Wanderers boss job on interim basis
Grant Basey has been appointed interim first-team manager at Cray Wanderers – but is still employed as academy youth development phase coach (U12s-U16s) at Charlton Athletic
The Isthmian League Premier Division side parted company with Danny Kedwell by mutual consent over the Christmas period.
Basey, who is being assisted by former Millwall and AFC Wimbledon striker Gary Alexander, made a winning start with the Wands as they picked up a 3-1 victory at East Thurrock United on New Year’s Day.
The result moved them up a place to 20th in the standings.
Basey sought permission from the Addicks to take on the role at the non-league club. He has been coaching Charlton’s youngsters in his current role since last year.
The left-back, who made more than 50 first-team appearances for the Addicks, returned in the summer of 2018 as kitman. He was appointed first-team development coach in September 2019.
Farnborough-born Basey played 61 games for Cray Wanderers and scored 13 goals. He was voted Supporter’s Player of the Year in 2015-16 as Cray reached the Isthmian North play-offs.
The former Wales U21 international also scored from inside his own half in the FA Cup at Badshot Lea in August 2016. Cray Wanderers were his final club before he hung up his boots.
Alexander has had spells as manager at both Greenwich Borough and Ashford United.
