Grant McCann refuses to reveal details of ref’s chat with Hull and Charlton benches

Hull City manager Grant McCann has refused to reveal what match official Martin Coy spoke to the two benches about in Saturday’s League One match against Charlton Athletic.

The referee went to speak to McCann and Addicks boss Lee Bowyer before a first-half corner was taken.

And Coy also had a conversation with Jason Pearce and Richard Smallwood, who captained the two teams.

BBC Humberside Sport asked McCann about the incident and he replied: “That’s something I’d rather not speak about. I think it is something the referee will have to speak to the FA about.

“Something happened and I think it probably will go into an official report. I know we’re okay our end – nothing will come back on us for that.

“There were players involved in it. But our player involved in it has done nothing wrong. It’s in the hands of the referee now and he’ll do what he wants with it.

“It’s whether it goes any further. In what I’ve seen, there is nothing in it.”

Charlton were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Darren Pratley was shown a straight red card for a kick out at Hull winger Mallik Wilks.

“It was right in front of the fourth official and the linesman,” said McCann.

“Whether it was a sending off or not I don’t know. They’ve obviously made a decision that it was.

“The second half they started quite brightly. They changed their shape and we got a message on to the players as quickly as we could about the shape change.

“We tried to keep Malik and Haks [Hakeeb Adelakun] higher against their back three. But in terms of our performance and defensive performance I thought we were good – and well worthy winners.”
