Greenwich glory in para swimming London Youth Games event

The Royal Borough of Greenwich won both the boys and girls para swimming section of the London Youth Games.

Eighty-three competitors, with a range of disabilities, from 12 London boroughs took part in a variety of events, such as the 25-metre race and mixed team relays, at Lewisham’s Glass Mill Leisure Centre.

Wandsworth and Bromley were close runners-up.

The swimming gala was one of 11 para events available to young, disabled athletes of secondary-school age across the 33 London boroughs.

The London Youth Games was launched in 1977 and is well-known as one of the world’s leading, youth sports events. Previous competitors Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Mo Farah have gone on to achieve Olympic glory.

Lewisham community sports manager, Matthew Houghton said: “We are proud to have hosted this event and we look forward to working London Youth Games on hosting future events at Glass Mill Leisure Centre.

“Congratulations for all those who took part – every swimmer left with a smile on their face – and a big thanks to the staff who helped with setting up and winding down the event.”
