Harris: Table not a fair reflection of Millwall’s start to the Championship campaign

Neil Harris believes Millwall deserve to be in a much stronger position than what they are currently in.

The Lions head into the second international break of the season on nine points having won two, drawn three and lost four of their nine games so far.

Harris’ men are tied with Derby, West Brom, Sheffield United, and Hull with 12 goals scored but were let down by individual errors in the opening two games of the season which saw them ship seven goals.

Following the 0-0 draw at West Brom on Saturday, Harris referenced his sides xG stats which appear to suggest that performances have merited more points than they have on the board.

“If you look at the stats in the programme it shows our expected goals is higher than West Brom’s,” said Harris. “We’ve scored the same amount of goals – we expect to score more goals.

“The ball has ended up in our net at times when it shouldn’t have done, because we made individual errors. We are the only team outside the top 11 that has a positive goal difference and that paints a real picture.

“Our fans have travelled up and down the country and seen us outperform teams most weeks and not got our reward.”

Sluggish starts are nothing new to Millwall, they started last season in a similar vein but had two more points at the same stage last term.

Harris said. “The football club has notoriously started slowly. I’m not saying I like it or accept it – I don’t. As the season progresses we get stronger and this group will get better.”
