With five minutes left on the clock, and the tie finely balanced thanks to second half goals from Liverpool’s former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge and an equaliser from Emerson, the mercurial Belgium midfielder shimmed through the Liverpool defence including Henderson, Fabinho, Keira, and Moreno, twice before smashing home the ball past Simon Mignolet to the delight of the Chelsea supporters

The video assistant referee (VAR) intervened to double-check that Emerson’s equaliser was not a result of him being offside.

The two sides meet again, this time in the Premier League, on Saturday at Stamford Bridge at 5.30pm.
