‘He was excellent’ – Millwall debutant earns praise from team-mate Billy Mitchell

Billy Mitchell praised new Millwall signing Callum Styles for his debut display in their 2-0 victory against Cardiff City at The Den on Saturday.

The South London club made the acquisition of the 22-year old on deadline day and the Hungarian international slotted straight into the left wing-back role.

Mitchell was impressed with what he saw from Styles.

Mitchell said: “He was excellent, both first half and second half. It was nice to get a little bit of time with him in the centre of midfield as well.

“I know he can play there, along with left-wing back. He was really good for Barnsley last season, one of their shining lights. It’s a good acquisition.”

Millwall ended a run of three straight Championship losses as Charlie Cresswell and Benik Afobe scored in the second half.

“It was a perfect day, given the last couple results have been difficult. It was nice to come back to The Den, a place where we are more comfortable and get a good result.

“[I had] a good first half, little bit quiet in the second half but we got the job done and sometimes that’s what it’s about.

“It’s not always going to be the greatest performance all the time, but sometimes you just have to get the job done and overall I was pleased.

“It was a really great finish for the second goal and that’s what he’s capable of doing. Benik is a top, top player. Sometimes he’s got that spark that we need in and around the box.

“Charlie Cresswell took everyone by surprise in the first game of the season, grabbing two, and he’s done the same thing again today. That’s what he brings – aggression aerially in both boxes. I’m pleased for him.

“You try not to worry too much [about a poor run of form] – never get too high and don’t get too low, because equally you can go on a run of winning games and it averages itself out.

“We were not too concerned, it’s still very early on in the season. There’s a lot of winnable games and we’ve done that today.”
