‘He’ll be back and he’ll be fine’ – Millwall squad have rallied around defender as he continues comeback from major injury

Ryan Leonard has talked about the Millwall squad lending their support to Danny McNamara as the defender works his way back from a serious knee injury.

McNamara will not play again this season after suffering the setback.

The Lions confirmed at the end of January that the 26-year-old, who is due to be out of contract at the end of June, was due to undergo surgery.

Both McNamara and Leonard both were forced off in the 2-2 draw against Cardiff City.

Leonard, who has triggered a 12-month deal extension due to the amount of games he has played, is hoping to be available for the run-in as he recovers from two tears to a calf muscle.

Asked about McNamara’s setback, Leonard told the South London Press: “It wasn’t a nice one for him or all the lads – we’re a really close group.

“There has been a big group of us that have been at the football club for a long time. We all rallied around him in the weeks afterwards.

“It is nice that he is in most days nows and he has started his rehab. We get to see him every day. To be fair he is working his arse off at the moment.

“He’ll be back and he’ll be back fine. It is an injury that you can come back from. He’ll be back ready to go again, whenever that may be.

“We have all rallied around him. It is football, and a job, but we are also friends and class ourselves as family as well – so we look after him.

“We both got injured in the same game which was a bit of a disaster, especially for Danny with it being a long-term injury.

“Tristan (Crama) had never played there before (at right-back) and he has been excellent. The games I’ve watched he has been really, really strong and done a really good job.

“Wes (Harding) has come in for the cup games and not played a lot of football.

“They are two really good lads.

“After the Leeds game I messaged Wes and said that I was really pleased for him to get his game.”
