Hercules Wimbledon AC round-up: Ellen Weir makes international debut at European Junior Champs

Ellen Weir finished 16th on her international debut in the European Junior Championships in Tallinn on Sunday.

The Wimbledon High School pupil, 17, clocked 16:34.39 seconds for 5,000m in a British Milers’ Club Grand Prix meeting at Watford in June to qualify for the event in Estonia. It is the third fastest time posted by a British teenager this summer.

Weir was unable to reproduce the form she showed at Watford and clocked 17:06.95.

Charlie Eastaugh also showed good form as he posted a PB for 800m at a British Milers’ Club meeting at Sutcliffe Park, Eltham.

Eastaugh’s 1:53.23 is the fastest time for the distance by a Hercules Wimbledon runner this summer. It improved on his 1:55.25, also set at Sutcliffe Park in August 2019.

Brothers Ed and George Mallett were the best of five Hercules Wimbledon runners in the SOAR 5,000m track meeting at Milton Keynes on Saturday. Both clocked PBs. Ed clocked 15:22.26 to take just over half-a-minute off his previous best time set in a Southern League meeting at Carshalton in June. George, just behind his brother in 15:22.86, was racing over the distance on the track for the first time.

Elliott Turbin and Conor Kelly helped Hercules Wimbledon make a winning start to their Ebbisham Young Athletes League programme at Woodcote School, Coulsdon.

Turbin was the outstanding individual at the meeting winning the U13 100m and 200m races in 12.5 and 24.8, and the high jump with 1.50 metres, the top performance for his age group this summer.

Kelly also gained an individual hat-trick taking the U15 100m and 200m in 11.9 and 24.2 and the high jump with 1.72m, the ninth best by a British U15 this summer. They also helped Hercules Wimbledon to victory in the sprint relays.

The club maintained their unbeaten record in the Southern Athletics League’s South West London division by comfortably winning their second match at Kingston.

Former junior international sprinter Rechmial Miller, who just missed out on a place in Britain’s team for the European U23 championships in Estonia, won the 100m in 10.9 on his Southern League debut and also anchored victory in the sprint relay.

Sprinter Devonte Casely-Hayford gained a hat-trick winning the 100m B and 200m A races and helping the sprint relay team to victory.
