Hercules Wimbledon round-up: Third-place finish at SAL Division One opener

Hercules Wimbledon enjoyed a successful introduction to the Southern Athletics League Division One with a third place finish in round one in Bracknell, writes George Mallett.

Having been promoted from Division Two last summer as champions, Hercules knew they would face stiffer competition against some of the best athletics clubs in the South of England but rose to the task on Saturday.

They finished third out of six with a haul of 254 points, with Harrow AC leading the charge on 346 ahead of Thames Valley Harriers on 318.

Points are scored with six available to the winner in both the A and B string competitions with the sixth-place finisher in each receiving one point.

Hercules scored heavily in the distance events, led by Charlie Wyllie who took maximum points in the men’s A 1,500m to accompany a second place finish in the 800m.

Gina Galbraith was first in the women’s B 1,500m and then second in the A string 3,000m. George Mallett finished first in the men’s B string 3,000m with Dan Cliffe third in the A string.

Kyra Stone showed her breadth of talents, finishing second in the women’s A 200m in 25.71, third in the A 100m in 12.75 and fifth in the women’s B long jump, contributing a hefty 11 points for Hercules.

She was assisted by Kacey Johnson, who was second in the women’s B 100m in 13.17.

Hercules scored well in the triple jump. Pete McLeod jumped 12.09m to take A string third with Mark Andrews winning the B string in 11.65m.

Andrews contributed a massive 31 points, notably taking further wins in the B discus (29.93m) and B hammer (25.35m), competing in nine different events over the course of the day.

Heather Letley also had a productive afternoon picking up second places in the women’s A Steeplechase and B 400m hurdles, the latter finish was matched in the A string by Victoria Johnston.

Letley, competing in nine events, picked up 25 points.

Christer Hagberg secured nine points alone in the men’s throws as he was third in the A string shot put and second in the discus. His throw in the latter of 39.71m was just less than 40 cm short of event winner Lewis Church of Medway & Maidstone.

Maximum points were secured in the men’s 4x400m as the Hercules quartet won by almost three seconds in 3:33.37.
