“He’s still learning” – Charlton boss Nigel Adkins on Liverpool loanee Liam Millar

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton boss Nigel Adkins says that Liverpool loanee Liam Millar is still learning his trade following the Addicks’ 1-0 home loss against Peterborough.

The 21-year-old Canadian winger was a real outlet for the Addicks’ as the hosts looked to attack down the left time and again – Millar and left-back Ben Purrington touching the ball 147 times between them. Only Jason Pearce touched the ball more than those two for Adkins’ team.

But his deliveries into the area against Posh didn’t always match the success that Millar had during Tuesday’s 6-0 win over Plymouth in which the loanee forced an own-goal and bagged his second goal of the season.

Following the defeat against Peterborough, Adkins said: “He’s a young player learning his way. What we’re trying to do is get good, talented players in the final-third of the pitch. From a game point of view, we’ve achieved that. Then it’s can we win some more corners, throw-ins, free-kicks, get at him drive into the penalty box. And then it’s final delivery, put the ball in the box.

“All part of his learning and development. As a team we’ve tried to put him in that area of the pitch, so we’ve achieved that. We’re trying to get talented players the ball and they’ve got to make the decisions and go and do that bit of magic. I’m sure we’ll sit down and reflect on it, talk about some of the different things and just help him so when we get in them positions again he can just keep improving.”
