Huddersfield Town chasing Charlton Athletic striker Karlan Grant – with Addicks owner Roland Duchatelet in control of attacker’s short-term future

Huddersfield want to do a deal for hotshot Karlan Grant – leaving Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet with a big call to make.

Reports yesterday claimed that the Terriers, rock bottom of the Premier League, were in talks over a switch before next Thursday’s transfer deadline.

But the South London Press was told that Grant had training as normal on Thursday morning ahead of Charlton’s big match at Peterborough United tomorrow. Lee Bowyer’s side are just three points off top spot in League One – with the goals of Grant (14) and Lyle Taylor (15) helping to fuel their promotion charge.

Huddersfield recently appointed German coach Jan Siewart to replace David Wagner. Although they look nailed on to drop into the Championship in May they would be able to offer bigger financial terms than the Addicks, who have offered a new deal to Grant.

The 21-year-old is inside the final six months of his contract but Charlton would be due compensation if he moved domestically. 

Reports have pegged Huddersfield’s valuation of the player at £2million.

If Duchatelet was to cash in on Grant – also linked with Glasgow Rangers and Brentford – then it would further deplete Charlton’s attacking options just as they look to step up their challenge for a top-two spot. 

Taylor is suspended for the next three matches after an FA disciplinary panel did not overturn his dismissal against Accrington Stanley last weekend. 

Igor Vetokele has only just resumed training after a shoulder injury but has failed to impress in his outings this season.

Charlton are weighing up a loan move for QPR’s Northern Ireland international forward Paul Smyth, 21.
