‘Huge amount to contribute’ – Chris Martin makes Championship claim after signing for QPR

Chris Martin believes he still has a huge amount to offer the Championship after signing for QPR at the start of the week.

The 34-year-old joined the Hoops as a free agent after having his contract terminated by Bristol City on deadline day.

Former Scotland international Martin has scored 110 Championship goals in 440 appearances during his career.

Martin, who had only made substitute appearances for the Robins this season before leaving Ashton Gate, has signed a deal until the end of the season at Loftus Road.

QPR forward Lydon Dykes was recently omitted to hospital with pneumonia and has missed the last two outings from Neil Critchley’s side.

Martin said: “At my age, people start to think: ‘Are you winding down? Are you coming to an end?’

“But that’s not how I feel at all – I still feel that I have a huge amount to contribute to this division.

“Hopefully I’m able to show that in the recent weeks and months. I felt from the club and the manager that there was a real desire to get the move done and to get it done quickly.

“I have been around the Championship for a long time, and it’s a really good club. They have made their feelings clear about how much I can contribute here, and I feel the same.

“There is potential for it to go really well.”

Despite QPR only winning once in their last 14 outings in the second tier, they are just four points off the play-off places.

“There is huge potential in this squad,” admitted Martin.

“When you look at the position in the league and how tight it is in the squad from the play-offs looking down, there is potential for a hell of a lot of clubs to challenge.

“There are a lot of points still to play for and that’s part of the excitement of what has drawn me here.”
