Hull boss Grant McCann: I’d had bad experience at Charlton before today’s League One trophy presentation

BY KAI BENNETT

Hull City manager Grant McCann got his hands on the League One trophy today – and admitted it was a change from his bad experience at The Valley.

The Addicks defeated Hull City 1-0 at The Valley but just missed out on the play-offs on goal difference to Oxford United.

Hull had already secured promotion prior to the fixture – with the silverware presented to them at an empty Valley after the full-time whistle.

McCann said: “Today wasn’t about the result for us, even though we wanted to win and break a record number of points in a season. Today was about lifting that trophy.

“Today was the best moment of my career, because all of the hard work to get to this point has paid off.

“I have bad memories of playing at The Valley against Charlton. When I was with Doncaster, we lost here in the play-offs. A lot of things didn’t go our way, even the bit when we won the penalty toss to have the penalties in front of the Doncaster fans and then for the police to tell us that we had to take it at the other end. Today felt good because of the bad memories I’ve got here.

“We came here today and tried to play with freedom and a swagger which we did in the first half, but unfortunately we didn’t take our chances.”

The headline is misleading- it suggests that something bad happened to him before the game on the day.
