Ice hockey: Streatham aim to make it a perfect 10 as Chieftains lie in wait

BY DAVID CARR

Streatham are looking to make it 10 league wins in a row as they entertain table toppers Chelmsford Chieftains in SW16 tomorrow.

The RedHawks had a weekend off last week and could only watch as both Chelmsford and Solent Devils knocked them off top position with victories against Bracknell and Invicta respectively.

This weekend will be the first time the RedHawks and Chieftains have met in almost three years due to league restructures and it’s already a game the South London side can ill-afford to drop points in.

The Essex side are four points ahead in the table but Streatham have three games in hand.

A quiet fixture schedule has allowed Adam Carr’s team to avoid major injuries but hampered attempts to build momentum.

“It’s a big game for the club and the supporters are all looking forward to it,” said general manager Graham D’Anger.

“The crowd in our last game against Invicta was fantastic and word is getting round that the team are challenging this year. We’re hoping that the backing in the stands continues as we head towards Christmas because we know it makes a big difference to the players skating out to a busy arena.”

The statistics show that it is in defence that the RedHawks are excelling, with netminder Damien King and his defensive colleagues boasting the stingiest goals-against record in the league. The team have conceded just 13 goals in nine league games, scoring 66 at the other end.

Player-coach Adam Carr and fellow forward Vanya Antonov have reached double figures for goals and are likely to be the league’s leading scorers.

After the Chelmsford game, Streatham face unbeaten Solent Devils before a road trip to Cardiff.
