Ice-hockey: Streatham enjoy weekend win double
Streatham completed a six-point weekend as they bounced back from defeat to Chelmsford Chieftains, writes Chris Beal.
The South Londoners produced a come-from-behind win over fellow title rivals Slough Jets on Saturday to win 3-2.
Streatham shut out the Solent Devils 3-0 on Sunday night.
Former RedHawks player Brandon Miles put Jets ahead in the second period from a five-on-three powerplay. Lewis English made it 2-0.
Streatham responded at 38:13 as Ryan Watts broke Jets goalie Matt Smital’s shutout.
JJ Pitchley tied up the contest in the third period as he netted a rebound. Jared Lane scored the winner on 50 minutes after a turnover from a Slough powerplay.
Devils netminder Aaron Taylor saved everything thrown at him in the first period on Sunday – Brett Shepherd doing the same at the other end.
Luke Brittle found a way past Taylor in the second period after 29 minutes and quickly became 2-0 after Ethan Lane backhanded in from close range.
The Devils took Taylor off to add the extra attacker but the gamble backfired as Brittle scored an empty-netter.
Streatham player-coach Ben Paynter said: “Good teams find a way to win.
“We needed to bounce back massively, and we did just that.
“After a bad weekend against Chelmsford last week, we needed to refind our form again, find a bit of intensity. I’m pleased because we did exactly that.
“Slough wasn’t pretty, but the boys did exactly what I asked. They stuck to the game plan, ground it out and found a way to win.”
Streatham face Oxford Stars at home on Sunday (6.45pm).
