Ice-hockey: Streatham shoot down the Stars in big home win

Streatham continued their successful start to the NIHL Division One South campaign with a 15-1 home win over Oxford City Stars on Sunday, writes Christopher Beal.

It took just 16 seconds for the rampant hosts to open the scoring as Luke Brittle netted the opener past Stars netminder Morgan Parsons.

Parsons withstood a barrage of Streatham chances for the next 10 minutes before Aidan Doughty doubled the lead.

Oxford held steady for seven minutes but then were stunned by conceding four goals in as many minutes which ensured Streatham ended the period 6-0 up.

Harvey Stead, Ethan Lane, Danny Ingoldsby and Sam Waller scored the goals.  Nik Romahs produced a rare goalie assist for Brittle’s second finish of the night, 52 seconds into the second period.

Player-coach Ben Paynter netted goal number eight on 33 minutes.

Roman Cathcart and Jared Lane scored in quick succession to make it 10-0.

JJ Pitchley bagged the 11th before Brittle collected his hat-trick on 54 minutes.

A minute later and Ryan Watt made it anything but an unlucky 13.

Joe Covey scored on a breakaway to end Romahs’ hopes of a shutout.

Streatham fired in two more before the game was up.  Henry Aiken claimed his first goal in four seasons after 58 minutes.

With 10 seconds left on the clock Lane rounded off the scoring.

Paynter said: “Games like that, are not the kind we really want to be playing in.

“But we dealt with the overall situation professionally.

“We knew what to expect going in and we tried out a few new things, which I think worked well.

“Overall I’m pleased with how we finished the game out.

“They were with us in the beginning, but we knew if we kept going and played with speed, we would grind them down – as we did.

Up next on the High Road the Redhawk’s will face Invicta Dynamos on Saturday, facing off at 5.30pm.
