Ice-hockey: Streatham’s Christmas break starts early due to Covid outbreak

BY DAVID CARR

Streatham’s festive break began early due to a Covid outbreak – with coach Michael Farn challenging his squad to come back next year hungry for more success.

The South Londoners will be top of the National Ice Hockey League South and hold a spot in the Britton Cup final when Big Ben chimes in the New Year.

“Clearly it’s not how we envisaged 2021 finishing” said Farn, pictured left.

“But if you’d told me at the start of the season we’d be top of the league, in the Britton Cup final and two wins away from lifting the London Cup at this stage, I would obviously take that.”

Streatham are seven points clear of second placed Solent Devils in the league and will play Invicta Dynamos in the Britton Cup final on the weekend of January 15-16, assuming no more restrictions follow after Christmas.

“I know this team has more to come so there’s a lot to look forward to in the second part of the season,” said Farn.

“Hopefully the guys come back after the festive break with the same hunger they’ve shown all year. It has been a great start with only one loss, but we’ve discussed in the locker room that we’ve won nothing yet.

“If we lose focus then we could just as easily end up empty handed and throw it all away.

“There are a number of teams now in the league who have the quality and desire to stop us lifting silverware, so we can’t afford to stand still and we always need to look to improve.”

Streatham are scheduled to return to action on January 8 with a trip to Romford before hosting Slough Jets on Sunday, January 9.
