“Incredible” – Joe Allen has his say on Chris Gunter as Charlton defender could become first Wales centurion

BY MAX HALL

The Welsh national team could not have asked any more of Charlton full-back Chris Gunter over his long career, according to Dragons ace Joe Allen.

With 99-times-capped Gunter on the verge of becoming his nation’s first male Welsh football centurion in Belgium on Wednesday night, fit-again international playmaker Allen paid tribute to his long-serving team-mate.

“It’s incredible, I think, to be the first one to do it,” said Stoke City’s Allen on Monday, of the 100-cap threshhold. “When you look at some of the world-class players that have represented Wales over the years that haven’t got anywhere near it, that just shows what an amazing achievement that would be.

“He’s been there, game in, game out for years and years – 100 per cent engagement, commitment, dedication, high performances. You can’t really ask for more than that for your country.”

Discussing the prospects of the defender, who joined the Addicks in October, of reaching the cap milestone, Allen added: “I’ll be really proud when he gets it, as will everyone who has played alongside him.”
