‘It doesn’t look like that’ – Oliver Glasner makes admission over Adam Wharton’s injury as surgery looks likely for Crystal Palace midfielder

Oliver Glasner admitted that Adam Wharton’s groin injury does not appear to be getting any better.

The Crystal Palace boss also said the midfielder will be forced to have surgery should the pain continue to deteriorate.

Wharton, 20, saw a specialist over the international break after withdrawing from England U21s’ European Championship qualifiers against Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Glasner also confirmed that Wharton is taking painkillers to help manage the injury.

“Believe me, we’re discussing it often,” said Glasner.

“Not every day, but during the international break – it’s a decision we will take together. We are talking with him and the doctor.

“If we have to do it, [it’s about] finding the right moment.

“Or, on the other side, his body will tell us.

“If the pain gets worse, then we have to do it.

“At the moment, it’s okay. He can do all the training sessions with pain, some days more, some days less. He is really the first guy [into the training ground] in the morning, together with Marc [Guehi].

“He is here at 8:30 in the morning and leaving very late [after] a lot of treatment, so he’s very professional. I have a lot of respect to him for how he deals with this.

“But we need him – he knows this. We hope it gets better, but to be honest, it doesn’t look like that.”
