‘It wasn’t perfect’ – Patrick Vieira’s assessment of Crystal Palace’s 1-0 win over Southampton

Patrick Vieira has admitted that Crystal Palace’s 1-0 win over Southampton “wasn’t perfect.”

The Eagles took the lead in the 38th minute through Odsonne Edouard. Wilfried Zaha won the ball back off Southampton defender Lyanco and played the onrushing Tyrick Mitchell through into the penalty area.

Mitchell played the ball along the face of goal for Edouard to score his third of the season.

Southampton started the second half well and forced Vicente Guaita into two really smart stops to deny Che Adams and then Stuart Armstrong.

The Eagles managed to hold onto their one-goal advantage and recorded their first clean sheet at home this season.

Patrick Vieira’s side moved back into the top 10 of the Premier League after picking up all three points.

“I’m really pleased,” said Vieira.

“We needed that win. Overall, even if it was quite challenging in the second half, we played well.

“It wasn’t perfect, and we still showed that there are still some parts of the game that we need to improve.

“We didn’t start the first half well. In the second half, we didn’t start the game well enough to be more solid, putting ourselves into trouble.

“We needed to show the other side of the game, and we did that in the second half.”

Summer signing Cheick Doucoure was absent from the matchday squad against Southampton.

“He was injured,” confirmed Vieira.

“It wasn’t something major, but we have to wait until Monday to see how long it will be.”
