“It wouldn’t worry me if I had to start him in League One” – Charlton boss Bowyer impressed by youngster

Lee Bowyer says he would have no hesitation in starting Ashley Maynard-Brewer in a League One match – after highlighting the Aussie keeper’s performance in an in-house game at the weekend.

The 21-year-old has made three first-team appearances for the Addicks, all in the EFL Cup.

Maynard-Brewer saved a couple of penalties when Charlton beat Brighton U23s in the competition last month.

The Addicks staged their own fixture at their Sparrows Lane training ground at the weekend to give minutes to the likes of Omar Bogle, Chuks Aneke, Marcus Maddison, Akin Famewo and Ben Watson.

Maynard-Brewer has previously had loans with Dulwich Hamlet and Dover Athletic.

“Ashley was unreal,” said Charlton manager Bowyer. “He was the best player. He made five unbelievable saves.

“I’m over the moon with the keepers. Ben [Amos] played well the other weekend [against Sunderland] and if I had to put the young lad in it wouldn’t worry me at all.”
