‘It’s been difficult’ – Adam Wharton reflects on injury spell after first Crystal Palace start of 2025 in Aston Villa win

BY ANDREW MCSTEEN

After starting his first Premier League game since late October following groin surgery, England and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton starred in his sides’ 4-1 demolition of Aston Villa at Selhurst Park on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old was involved in all three of Palace’s goals before being subbed off in the 78th minute for Daichi Kamada.

“It was a top performance. I had to be patient at times, but that’s what you’ve got to do against the top teams: to be patient, wait for the right moment and then take your chances. We’ve done that tonight and it’s a great three points,” he said.

“It’s not nice being injured and on the sidelines, but I’ve been building my fitness and coming off the bench a few times. I was delighted to be able to start today and get some good minutes in the legs – I’m feeling good.

“I thought it was alright, there were some good things but lots of things to improve on as well.

“I’ll just watch it back and see what I can do better. But the result is more important. It’s good to be involved in the goals, but as long as the team wins, that’s the main thing.”

Wharton has had his minutes managed since having surgery and only made his first start on Tuesday despite being back for the last three Premier League outings.

“It’s been difficult,” he added.

“Obviously, you’ve got family, friends, supporting and helping you, but it’s not the best thing being on the sideline for me, I hate it. There’s nothing worse. it’s difficult, but that’s part of football,” he said.

“You know, there’s worse injuries that I could have had.  It is what it is. I’ve got through it now thankfully, and I’m feeling good, which is the main thing.”
