‘It’s certainly not over’ – Wimbledon chief staying positive despite survival challenge getting even tougher
AFC Wimbledon manager Mark Bowen said that his side “have to start winning games” if they want any chance of staying in League One.
The Dons find themselves 22nd in the table, without a win in their last 23 games in all competitions, and four points from safety heading into the final five matches of the season.
They ended a run of six losses in a row on Tuesday evening thanks to a late Zach Robinson equaliser in the 1-1 draw with South London rivals Charlton Athletic.
Relegation rivals Morecambe and Fleetwood both picked up favourable results on Tuesday evening, which dragged them further away from the relegation zone.
Bowen’s side takes on automatic promotion hopefuls Milton Keynes on Saturday and have games against Crewe and Fleetwood remaining.
“You come in, and you hope that results have gone in our favour, and they haven’t really gone in our favour,” said Bowen.
“There is no point moaning about it. To give ourselves any chance, we have got to start winning games.
“In the 90th minute at Sheffield Wednesday away, we thought that we were going to win the game, and we missed the chance [through Ayoub Assal].
“When we got the equaliser tonight, I thought that we were going to win the game and we didn’t.
“But we will take positives out of it. In the second half especially, the players were really focused and gave me everything they could.
“It’s certainly not all over. We have got five games left, and we have got to win a couple of them at least.”
