It’s Rule of Six for Wayfarers

A hockey club’s top six ladies’ teams all won on the same weekend for the first time in six years, writes Davina Hyde.

South London-based London Wayfarers, who won England Hockey Club of the year in 2019, run 19 senior sides, and have 1,000 juniors.

The ladies’ 3rd, 4th and 5th teams have been striving to all win together on the same weekend since their last combined win six years ago in November 2014.

With the 1s, 2s and Jaguars (6s) also winning 5-0, 2-1 and 8-0 respectively, the celebrations look to become even bigger, but will, unfortunately, have to wait until after the pandemic.

Whilst most of the teams have a weekend off, the club will be looking to carry positive momentum into games over the next few weeks.

Wayfarers play at several South and West London sports grounds, including Battersea Park, Kennington Park, Streatham and Clapham High School, Dulwich College, Wimbledon High School, Newton Prep, St Francis Xavier 6th Form College and Crystal Palace.

Consisting of mainly younger players in their twenties, there is great team spirit within the club and they have their team socials around South London.

Mark Atherton, Ladies 1st Team Coach said: “It is fantastic for the club to have recorded such a strong set of results on the same day. Being able to continue playing competitive sport during these challenging times has had a hugely positive impact on people’s lives and the results are testament to the hard work that the players have put over recent weeks.”
