‘It’s the challenge we have’ – Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner discusses Michael Olise replacement plans
Oliver Glasner believes it will cost more than the £50million Crystal Palace received for Michael Olise to replace the now Bayern Munich attacker.
The 22-year-old informed the Eagles of his decision to join the Champions League giants this summer after they met his release clause, turning down proposals from Newcastle and Chelsea.
Olise recorded 16 goal contributions in 19 Premier League outings last season and also impressed for France at this summer’s Olympic Games, scoring twice and picking up five assists as they picked up a silver medal.
The Eagles have managed to keep hold of Eberechi Eze heading into the final two weeks of the transfer window. They have also added Daichi Kamada and Ismaila Sarr to their attacking ranks.
“I never speak about difficulties – it’s the challenge we have,” said Glasner about replacing Olise. “It’s about thinking in solutions, not in problems. It’s about which profiles we have now and which players we have. How can we get them into positions where they can show their strengths?
“It’s different if Daichi plays there. It’s different if Ismaila plays there. It’s different if Odsonne plays there, like he did against West Ham in this position. It’s different if Jeffrey Schlupp plays there – but they all have their strengths.
“One is quicker, one is more of a technical player and one is more of a striker. It’s now about adapting.
“During the game, we want to influence the rhythm of the game with substitutions, and we have many opportunities now.
“It’s not about replacing Michael one to one and having the same type and quality because we would have had to spend more money than we got from his sale.
“We decided no – different profiles and different players with their qualities. Everyone has shown that they can score goals – everyone in a different way.
“It’s good for us because the opposition team never knows who will play and which kind of player they can expect.”
When asked if he had spoken with Olise since he completed the switch to the Bundesliga side, Glasner said: “It’s funny…sometimes when I messaged him here when I was his manager, he didn’t answer.
“Since he was in Munich, I messaged him and he answered the same day.
“He had a great Olympics, like JP, with France.
“He decided to make the next step. He’s a great player and I wish him all the best.”
