‘It’s working well’ – AFC Wimbledon captain Reeves enjoying life next to summer signing in midfield

AFC Wimbledon captain Jake Reeves believes the balance is working well in the midfield at the start of the 2024-25 season.

The 31-year-old has started every League Two outing alongside summer signing Alistair Smith, who joined on a season-long loan from Lincoln.

One of James Ball and Myles Hippolyte have started in the first four League Two outings to complete the midfield three.

Johnnie Jackson’s side are playing a 5-3-2 this season, with the side changing to a 3-5-2 when going forward.

“One of the big things about what we spoke about from last year is that we wanted to have more control in games,” said Reeves.

“This [system] allows us to have control with and without the ball. We played as a midfield four, with two in the middle. It doesn’t allow for as many passing options, as there are limited numbers in there.

“It’s working well and I’m really enjoying it – it’s giving me more freedom to get on the ball and express myself that way.

“Alistair has settled in really well – there is plenty more to come from him.

“He’s very effective in that last third and running forward. Using his size as well, he’s a big boy.

“I like playing with him because he can do all parts of the game. If I feel there is an opportunity to break into the box, I do not have to tell him to sit for me – he will naturally see that because of the player he is.

“The balance is working well.”

Reeves lost midfield partner Armani Little this summer, with the former Southampton youngster joining league rivals Gillingham.

“I got really well with Armani,” said Reeves.

“He didn’t want to leave, but it’s just one of those things sometimes that happen in football.

“He was a natural 10 when he was younger, so he would have suited the way that we’re playing now.

“It’s unfortunate that he has left that at the time he has.”
