Jack Payne turns down bumper Swindon Town deal to become Charlton’s latest transfer window addition

Charlton Athletic are set to confirm the signing of Jack Payne – their sixth signing of the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old midfielder turned down a bumper contract extension at Swindon Town to make his move to The Valley happen.

Payne has agreed a two-year contract and underwent his medical this morning.

He will become the third former Town player to follow Ben Garner to SE7.

Garner has already swooped for goalkeeper Joe Wollacott and right-back Mandela Egbo. Scott Marshall, part of his backroom team, has also made the switch to the League One club.

Payne is most comfortable playing as either a number eight or 10 and he scored 14 goals in 41 appearances for Swindon last season as they reached the League Two play-offs.

The former Tottenham youngster has been one of Town’s top performers since joining them from Lincoln City in August 2020.

Charlton have tweaked their midfield options with Conor McGrandles signing earlier in the current window once his Lincoln contract expired.

Payne has won promotion three times in his career – with Southend United (2014-15 League Two play-off final), Huddersfield Town (2016-17 Championship play-off finals) and Blackburn Rovers (League One runner-up 2017-18).
