James Meredith one of the strongest left-backs Millwall have had in years – boss Neil Harris

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

James Meredith has signed a new deal – with Neil Harris claiming he is one of the best left-backs to grace Millwall’s team in recent history.

The 30-year-old was part of Australia’s World  Cup squad and played all 46 Championship games for the Lions last season after a free transfer switch from Bradford City.

Millwall manager Harris said: “He came in as a left-back who was competing in pre-season with the club captain [Tony Craig]. James convinced me he should be winning the shirt and never looked back.

“He had a very successful season and was a huge part in us keeping so many clean sheets. He grew into being a top left-back in the division – he had never played there before but had been a top performer in League One in the past few seasons.

“I’d go as far as saying that there were not many better left-backs in the Championship when you look at his displays.

“He fits the ethos of the dressing room – a huge hunger to work hard and very professional. Straight away he settled in the area, he bought a place and enjoys living in London. His performances have reaped success for him.

“He is as strong a Millwall left-back as I’ve seen in years with his aggression. You don’t get any higher recognition than forcing your way back into the national side and going to a World Cup.

“James is playing the best football of his career and is the fittest he has ever been. He is a late developer, having come back into the professional game in his 20s, and that will stand him in good stead for the years to come.”
