Jason Roy enjoys Surrey CCC return

When Surrey opened their T20 Blast account with back-to-back defeats, everyone pointed to who they were missing.

Since then, the Oval outfit have flexed their collective muscles, thanks, primarily, to the returning Aaron Finch, who has taken his run tally to 315 at an average of 157.50.

As it transpired, Roy – who scored 28 – had the best seat in the house, as Surrey scored an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Somerset at the Oval.

The hosts reached their target in just 6.4 overs, with Finch hitting an unbeaten 43 off only 21 balls.

“The team are playing some excellent T20 cricket now, but the next match is the one we’ve got to concentrate on,” said Roy.

“As for Aaron Finch, he’s so powerful and so consistent – he’s just awesome. It was great to play and the pitch was good. All credit to our bowlers for the way they performed.

“They bowled really well even though it was a pretty good wicket. The slower balls were just hanging in the pitch, so I actually think we did really well to keep them to 99.

“It was great to have Tom Curran fit again, too, because he’s a smart bowler as he’s also shown in England colours.

“I was actually a little bit nervous, as it was my first game for the club this season. But it was a nice feeling, as well, because Surrey cricket is very special to me.

“But when you go out there with freedom, you can just enjoy yourself and see what happens. There’s not a lot of time to be thinking about it too much.

“The crowd seemed to love it, although they were pretty liquided up from the first ball. I got a bit of abuse, even though it’s my home ground, but it is what it is and we’re happy to come away with a win.

“It’s all about peaking, especially in a competition like this where the games come thick and fast. You’ve got to find a rhythm and a routine and find a way of getting over the line. We seem to be doing that and I’m really looking forward to the next game against Glamorgan on Tuesday.”
