Jayden Stockley backs fellow Charlton striker Mason Burstow to learn from recent missed opportunities

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton striker Jayden Stockley says that missing chances is all a part of the learning process that young strikers go through.

The Addicks forward was asked about playing alongside 18-year-old strike partner Mason Burstow during Saturday’s stalemate with Sunderland at The Valley.

The youngster has notched six goals in all competitions during his maiden season in senior football – a promising start that saw him bag a deadline day move to Premier League giants Chelsea before being loaned back to the Addicks for the rest of the season.

But he’s now gone seven games without a goal and has missed decent openings in some recent outings – including one set up for him by Stockley against the Black Cats over the weekend.

“I burst onto the scene really young at Bournemouth, at 15, 16,” said Stockley.

“The confidence he shows – I wish I had at that age. Albeit he’s missed a couple of chances but he keeps going. His movement is second to none. It was the first time I played with him today. I realised how athletic he is.

“Those defining moments, where he’s had a chance here and there. He’ll become accustomed. Missing those chances will do him the world of good. He’s a lovely lad. I noticed his talent early on in pre-season. I can’t speak highly enough of his attitude. It was great working with him today and he’s doing his absolute best for this football club.”
